Fergusson first visited Pourville, near Dieppe, in 1922 when he joined Margaret (Meg) Morris and her dance school during the summer months.
In 1926, the year in which this work was painted, the village was a likely stop-over for Fergusson and Meg travelling from London to the South of France. In her biography on Fergusson Meg described Pourville as 'a charming little town, still unspoiled, with good bathing and charming country around'.
