Alexandra Gardner was born in 1945 in Cambuslang, Glasgow. From the age of 5 she displayed an early aptitude for drawing and painting. She trained at the Glasgow School of Art (1963 - 1968) under the tutelage of David Donaldson. On graduating she joined the teaching staff at GSA, where she remained as lecturer until 1989.
Her paintings encompass a remarkably diverse range of subjects - still life, portrait studies, nudes, landscape, as well as her hallmark moody bars, diners and restaurants.
She has won numerous awards including a Travelling award to Italy from the Scottish Arts Council and her work is held in collections throughout the UK, including Glasgow Cleveland Museum, Robert Fleming Holdings, Cleveland Museum and Lillie Art Gallery (Milngavie).
