The murder of a part-time prostitute in a bedroom in Camden Town caused a sensation in September 1907. Walter Sickert produced a series of paintings and drawings that alluded to the murder in their titles. He also made a number of peripheral works, which share the same locality, bedroom interiors and sinister charge, but without any reference to murder in their titles. This drawing is a related sketch for one of these work - 'Dawn: Camden Town'
