A close friend of Fergusson, John MacMillan Marshall was a medical student at Edinburgh University, where Fergusson maintained he had studied medicine on leaving school with the intention of becoming a naval surgeon. It is possible that he embellished this aspect of his past and that his links to the university were in fact no more than his attendance at the occasional anatomy classes to draw.
Marshall was a sitter for an early oil portrait that Fergusson painted.
