In the summer of 1905 Peploe and Fergusson were painting together at the fashionable Normandy coastal resorts of Paris-Plage and Dieppe. The following year they were again at Paris-Plage and Le Touquet, and in 1907 at Etaples. Here Peploe has succeeded in capturing the blustery weather and rapid movement of the waves and clouds, bringing to mind the work of Boudin. These stormy weather effects have been depicted using thick, quickly applied strokes with the use of darker tones emphasising the movement and emotion of the scene.
