The Peploe family spent the summer of 1913 in Cassis with Fergusson and Anne Estelle Rice.
It was Peploe's first visit to visit to Cassis and he became so enamoured with the Mediterranean crystalline light that he decided to stay in the south. This painting of the narrow streets behind the old harbour front in Cassis, shows an almost "Cloisonniste" delimitation of colour and form.
